Compromised Cards

COMPROMISED DEBIT CARD IMPORTANT NOTICE

Blackhawk Bank & Trust was recently alerted of a data breach of Hy-Vee involving payment processing systems that handle transactions at some Hy-Vee fuel pumps, drive-thru coffee shops and restaurants.

The restaurants affected include Hy-Vee Market Grilles, Market Grille Expresses and Wahlburgers locations that the company owns and operates. Hy-Vee said it believes the breach does not affect payment card terminals used at its grocery store checkout lanes, pharmacies or convenience stores, as these systems rely on a security technology designed to defeat card-skimming malware.

What this means to you as a Blackhawk Bank & Trust cardholder:

If you receive a letter from us on or after Tuesday, August 27 (delivered via USPS mail), your card has been compromised.

The compromised card means that you have swiped your card at a merchant whose database, or it’s processors has been broken into (in this case Hy-Vee) making it possible for cybercriminals to retrieve the information contained on the strip of the back of your card including your card number and PIN. With this information, cybercriminals are capable of copying data stored on a credit or debit card's magnetic stripe and then producing a counterfeit copy of the card allowing them to make unauthorized purchases and/or withdrawals from your account. The level of risk with compromised cards is difficult to determine. Blackhawk Bank & Trust supports the MasterCard® initiative of reissuing cards, regardless of level of risk, in an effort to provide you with the utmost in privacy and security regarding your financial accounts and records with us. There is no charge to you for the replacement card.

Next steps for compromised cardholders:

STEP 1: LOOK FOR YOUR NEW CARD

A replacement card, with a new card number and PIN has been ordered for you. Your new card will arrive in your mailbox within 7-10 business days. You may choose your own PIN as soon as you receive your card or use the pre-assigned PIN from a separate mailing.

STEP 2: TAKE CAUTION

Blackhawk Bank & Trust will cancel your current, compromised card within 10-20 business days from the date on this letter. We ask that you refrain from using your current card, if possible, until you receive your new card. Once your new card is received, we ask that you destroy your current card by cutting it in pieces.

STEP 3: UPDATE YOUR PAYMENTS

If you have any recurring transactions to your account using your present card number, you will need to notify these businesses, vendors, etc. of your new card number upon receiving your new card.

STEP 4: STAY VIGILANT

You should carefully examine your monthly statement to verify charges. We recommend using online banking and the CardValet app to monitor your debit card activity. If anything looks suspicious, promptly report the incident to the Blackhawk Bank & Trust ATM Department at (309) 787-9598. You may also send us a secure message
